4:00 pm ET Arrive at New River Gorge National River

At the Canyon Rim Visitor Center, you can learn about the gorge and those that have lived in the area. From here you can see the New River Bridge. Opened in 1977, the bridge spans 1,700 feet across the New River Gorge and 875 feet above the bottom of the Gorge.
(If the Visitor Center is not open when we arrive, the overlook outside offers a great view of the New River Bridge and the Canyon and the New River below.) 

Dinner is included at Pasquale’s Italian Restaurant in Beckley, West Virginia.

Sunday, October 30
Breakfast is included at the Hampton Inn.

8:00 am Depart from the Hampton Inn

11:00 am Lunch is included at Ruby Tuesday’s in Bedford, Virginia.

12:30 pm National D-Day Memorial
Located in Bedford, Virginia, the city with the highest per-capita loses on D-Day, this Memorial honors veterans of all wars.

3:00 pm This afternoon we will visit Poplar Forest.
Poplar Forest served as Thomas Jefferson’s private retreat.  
One of two homes that Jefferson designed and built for his own use, Poplar Forest is being preserved for future generations to visit.

Our tour continues to the Blue Ridge Parkway.
The idea of a road connecting Shenandoah National Park and Great Smoky Mountains National Park began in the 1930s. Construction began in 1935 and dedication took place in 1987.

Later this afternoon we’ll arrive at The Peaks of Otter Lodge.

The Peaks of Otter Lodge is on the Blue Ridge Parkway, within the park’s boundary. It’s clean and nice and offers a wonderful view. It is rustic.  
  • There is no phone in the room and no cell phone service.  
  • In case of an emergency back home, people can call the lodge’s front desk at 540-586-1081.  
  • And there are steps to go to your room no matter which of the two floors you are on.  
  • Dinner and Breakfast will be in the Lodge’s restaurant, which is in a building separate from where your room will be.

Dinner is included in the Lake View Restaurant at Peaks of Otter.

Monday, October 31
Breakfast is included at Peaks of Otter Lodge.

We will start the day traveling along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Visit the Walton’s Mountain Museum
Author Earl Hamner, Jr. grew up in Schuyler, Virginia. His childhood memories were preserved in journals that became the stories shown on the TV show “The Waltons”.  

Later today we’ll arrive at The Greenbrier, America’s Resort since 1778.

The Greenbrier takes pride in time-honoured traditions and standards, including dress in the public areas of the hotel. Resort attire, business casual and finest dress are terms used for various locations within the resort. In general, hats and caps on gentlemen are not permitted. Dinner and Breakfast in the Main Dining Room are included in your package at The Greenbrier. At Breakfast resort attire is required (collared sport shirts, sweaters, jackets, slacks and walking shorts). For Dinner in the Main Dining Room, a jacket and tie are required for men and dresses or evening suits for women. More casual dining is available (on your own) in other areas of the hotel.

Tuesday, November 1

Time TBA Tour The Bunker
Construction began in 1958 on the 112,544-square-foot bunker, which was built 720 feet into the hillside under The Greenbrier's West Virginia Wing. Once complete in 1961, the facility was maintained in a constant state of readiness by a small group of government employees working undercover as Forsythe Associates, a company hired by the resort for audio/visual support services.
Comfortable walking shoes are recommended for this tour.

We’ll travel home, stopping for breaks and lunch (on your own).
